The short answer

Yes, you can strength train after ACL surgery or a knee injury, and it is one of the things Performance EDU Fitness in south Reno does most. We work with people at every stage, from pre-surgery prehab through return to sport.

We coordinate with your surgeon and physical therapist rather than working around them, and Kime Performance Physical Therapy is in the same building. Training starts with a movement evaluation that tells us what your knee can tolerate today, and the program progresses from there.

Why it matters

Discharged from PT is not the finish line.

Being discharged from physical therapy means you are no longer in pain. It does not mean you are ready to cut, land, or ski. The gap between cleared by your therapist and ready for your sport is where reinjury risk lives. We close that gap with conservative, measured progressions.

Every stage

Before surgery, after PT, back to sport.

Before surgery

Our pre-surgery training program works best 4 to 8 weeks before your procedure. Entering surgery stronger generally means an easier rehab.

After physical therapy

Bridging the Gap takes the handoff from your PT and rebuilds strength, stability, and confidence in the knee.

Return to sport

Hip and trunk stability, landing mechanics, and deceleration work that keeps a knee out of the positions that tear an ACL.

How it works

A plan built around your knee.

  1. Movement evaluation

Bring your surgical history and recent PT notes. We test mobility, movement quality, and strength, and note what your knee tolerates.

  2. Coordinated care

We coordinate with your physical therapist or surgeon when needed, so nothing falls through the cracks between clinic and gym.

  3. Progressive 1-on-1 training

Single-leg strength, eccentric control, and stability, loaded as your knee adapts.

  4. Re-test

Same tests every 8 to 12 weeks, so progress is measured, not assumed.

Common questions

Straight answers.

What is the difference between physical therapy and return-to-performance training?

Physical therapy is clinical care: diagnosing and treating an injury and restoring function until you are out of pain. Return-to-performance training starts where PT ends, rebuilding the strength, power, and control you need for your sport or active life. Kime Performance Physical Therapy provides the clinical care in our building, and Performance EDU coaches take the handoff.

How soon after ACL surgery can I start training with you?

That depends on your surgeon's and physical therapist's guidance and where you are in rehab. Many clients come to us as they finish PT through Bridging the Gap. If you are still in active rehab, Kime Performance Physical Therapy is in the same building, and we coordinate with your care team.

Do you work with my physical therapist?

Yes. We coordinate with your physical therapist or medical provider when needed. If you are treated at Kime PT, the handoff happens in the same building.

Can you help me prepare before ACL surgery?

Yes. Our pre-surgery training program is built for procedures including ACL reconstruction, ideally 4 to 8 weeks before surgery.

I want to ski again after my ACL. Can you get me ready?

Yes. Ski-specific knee stability and eccentric quad strength are core to our ski dryland program, which is led by a former U.S. Disabled Ski Team strength coach.

Do you train young athletes after ACL injuries?

Yes. We work with youth, high school, and college athletes returning to sport. See youth athlete training.

Your rehab got you here. We will take it from here.
